Lack of access to affordable, hygienic menstrual products affects millions of girls in the developing world. As many as 10% of school aged girls miss school because of it. The effect of these missed days is devastating, with girls losing up to 20% of their education, increasing the likelihood of dropping out, earlier marriage and pregnancy. We don’t want Siraba School girls to suffer from statistics such as these!

On our 2016 & 2017 visits we brought a supply of AFRIpad kits containing reusable sanitary pads (made by a women’s cooperative in Uganda) that are designed to provide effective, hygienic, and comfortable protection for 12+ months of use. In 2017 Health Education specialist Hawa (assisted by teenage mission volunteer Rose) held a special gathering of Siraba School girls to distribute the kits, discuss menstrual health and hygiene, answer any questions, and encourage the girls to not let anything get in the way of their education.  The girls were very happy to receive the kits (and the encouragement!). Hawa and Koro later held a similar gathering with girls in Piébougou Middle School. We hope to continue bringing AFRIpads each year, and will always strive to find ways to help the girls – and boys – of Siraba School.
