Having a nearby toilet may be (hopefully is) something many of us reading this post take for granted. But for 4.5 billion people worldwide, that is not the case (WorldToiletDay.com). A 2018 report by WaterAid.org finds that one in three schools worldwide, affecting 620 million schoolchildren – almost twice the population of the entire USA! – don’t have decent toilets. “For these young people, it’s normal to run home at breaktime to relieve themselves, use bushes on the school grounds, or miss lessons entirely because they are sick or on their period.”
But in Dagabo, students at Siraba School have easy access to 2 sets of latrines (one for boys and one for girls) with close-by hand washing stations. Also this year, our partners in the Dagabo School Committee are building an additional latrine in the teachers’ compound. One Global Village knows that personal health and hygiene are vital to a community’s success, and are happy that families in Dagabo have access to safe sanitation and clean water.
